Voicemail Technology

Many a company's call center solution would be of little use without a solid voicemail system that allowed customers or clients to leave long, detailed, and secure messages. Without this technology to improve the communication between businesses and those they work with, many important and profitable relationships would quickly fall through. One of the first companies to heavily invest in voicemail, GE, has previously estimated that the technology saved them over a thousand dollars per year per employee.

As a digital answering service, voicemail has the ability to both answer calls and record voice messages. The answering mode handles incoming calls, while voice messaging allows any user with a mailbox number to send direct messages to one or more users' mailbox.

Most people who have dialed call center services that utilize a public branch exchange system have probably had the experience of being forwarded from one extension to another. This saves the caller from having to redial if they connect to the wrong person, as well as increasing the likelihood that they will be able to connect to an actual human being if the initial contact is unavailable. Of course, the system can also forward the caller to voicemail if no one is available to answer. We have grown so accustomed to this technology that we tend to forget just how new it is. In the early days of voicemail systems, outside calls could not be answered. Even after that was addressed, it would be a while before the systems supported signaling that notified the system where the calls were being forwarded to.

While e-mail has become the communication standard for many businesses these days, there are plenty of call center solutions that still utilize voice messaging, which can almost be considered the telephone equivalent. Systems generally allow users to log in and leave another user or users a voice message without actually having to call them. This is perfect when a user wants to convey a message without needing to converse, or intends to share the message with many different users. Despite computer advances, voicemail still has its uses.
